CONSUMER ALERT ON INDOMIE INSTANT NOODLES

CCC/CP/CA/2/2022

EGYPT ORDERS THE WITHDRAW OF INDOMIE CHICKEN AND VEGETABLES FLAVOURED INSTANT NOODLES CHILI PACKS FROM THE EGYPTIAN MARKET

The COMESA Competition Commission (“the Commission”), has become aware that the Food Safety Authority of Egypt (FSA) announced on Tuesday 26th April 2022, that it had given Indomie Egypt forty-eight (48) hours to pull its chicken and vegetables flavoured instant noodles as well as instant noodles with chili packs from Egyptian market, as they are not safe for human consumption.

According to FSA, food safety tests found that Indomie’s chili packets and the chicken and vegetable flavor packets contained “aflatoxins and pesticide residues in quantities that exceeded safe limits.” The Authority stated that other than those three products, Indomie instant noodles were generally found to be safe for human consumption.

The affected Indomie products can be identified as indicated below:

Indomie chicken flavoured instant noodles

Indomie vegetable flavoured instant noodles

FSA’s directive further required Indomie Egypt to remove the claim written on the product packages regarding the benefits of vitamin B and mineral salts of iron, zinc and calcium.

Following the directive, 733,340 cartons of different Indomie flavors have been withdrawn from the Egyptian market by the supplier.

The Commission through its market observatory has established that some of the recalled Indomie products are imported and marketed in other Member States of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (“the Common Market”). The Commission would like therefore to alert the general public of the risks in consuming above Indomie instant noodles as established by the FSA and to exercise caution on the consumption of the same.

The Commission further wishes to request any person who establishes that the above products are being sold in the Common Market to report the matter to the Commission on +265 (0) 1 772466 or contact the undersigned on mdisasa@comesa.int; or Mr. Steven Kamukama, manager Consumer Welfare and Advocacy Division on skamukama@comesa.int .

Consumers may also contact their national consumer institutions or any other body with the mandate on consumer protection in their countries.
